Origin
Traditional Uses:
- Thyme is one of the earliest medicinal plants in western herbal medicine. Thyme was used as long ago as 2000 BC in ancient Sumeria. During World War I, Thyme Oil was used as a disinfectant in hospitals. Throughout history, in many parts of the world, thyme has been associated with courage, strong morale, and clear thinking.
- The name “thyme” has two possible Greek origins. The first, “thymon,” means to fumigate, coming from the herb being used as incense. The second is “thumon,” meaning courage.
About the Plant:
- Thyme is a perennial evergreen subshrub that grows up to 1.5 feet high. It has a woody root with small grey-green, oval leaves, and pale purple or white flowers.
- Thyme essential oils are extracted by steam or water distillation from the fresh or partially dried leaves and flower tops. Red Thyme Essential Oil is the first distillate in the distillation process. Thymol is the active compound responsible for this aromatic herb’s deep healing power. Red Thyme is also widely used as a flavoring and preservative.
